The Grace And Agility Of Gymnastics

Gymnastics is one of the most popular sports in the world. People love to watch gymnastics competitions on television and many children join clubs in hopes of becoming the next Olympic star. Gymnastics is fascinating to watch because of the graceful and acrobatic movements that the gymnasts are able to perform. Most people could never dream of doing flips on a balance beam but there are those that can and they appear to do it with ease.

Gymnastics is based on a Greek type of ancient exercise. At most gymnastics competitions there are both men's and women's events. The men's events are parallel bars, rings, side horse, vaulting horse, horizontal bar, and floor exercise. Women's events are balance beam, vaulting horse, uneven bars, and floor exercise.

The men's events focus mainly on upper body strength. Rings are particularly difficult since the gymnasts need to perform certain movements while holding themselves up on suspended rings. Women's events also focus on strength, but agility and gracefulness often are more important. The balance beam often seems the most difficult since many of us would have trouble performing the movements even on the floor.

The Olympic gymnastic events are the most popular in the world. People from a myriad of nations support the gymnasts from their countries. The United States athletes usually win bronze, silver, and frequently the gold medals. Winning the gold makes them the best gymnasts in the world. The winners, specifically women, are the sweetheart of the whole country for a few years.

If you are interested in getting your child into gymnastics, you should start when they are very young. Good candidates for gymnastics are children who are fairly agile and flexible to begin with, although they can improve their skills while in lessons. Most cities have several gymnastics clubs that you can choose from, some with classes just for fun, while some are more serious.

Rhythmic gymnastics is a new entrant into this spectacular sport. This utilizes five objects which are rope, ball, clubs, ribbon, and hoop. A gymnast can choose any of the five objects to carry out the routine. Ina team event, all five implements can be used by five different gymnasts. Rhythmic gymnastics are currently restricted to women, possibly owing to their natural grace, and it is fascinating and captivating to watch them make these objects dance to their tune.

A recent addition as a sport to the Summer Olympics roster has been Trampolining. Trampolining requires competitors to accomplish specific moves, which are then judged. This too is now carried out as a team event with two members in sync.

Children start training to be professional gymnasts at a young age. They tend to reach the height of their performance abilities when they are in their late teens or early twenties. To be pros, these children end up devoting their lives to gymnastics and will train everyday of the week. If they get older and don't perform well, it can be a definite blow to their egos. After all, they've been working their whole lives to be the best.

Gymnastics as an audience sport is fascinating especially in a live performance. Most competitive events are telecast live to the entire world and get very high viewer ship ratings.
