Building up the number of links into your own site is essential for SEO because search engines count the number of inward links that you have. Yahoo and Google analyse these links differently, with Google generally being far more specific about which links they accept. A search for one phrase I searched for, for example, returned 63 links with Google, yet 3250 with Yahoo.
'Page-rank' is Google's grading of your website, measured via a combination of factors including the number of inward links, the keyword density of your page, how often your pages are updated etc. A site with incoming links from other high Page-rank valued sites, will itself be rated higher. A link that comes from the MSN homepage for example, will be considered more important than a link from a person's personal homepage. Additionally, some search engines rate certain factors higher than other factors. A dot.com for example, may have a higher weighting in one algorithm, than a dot.de for example. Additionally, a link with fewer backslashes in the URL, will likely have a higher weighting than one with more backslashes. An example of this is that bellydance.com would get a higher weighting value than bellydance.com/links/dance.
Many people attempt to score higher with Google searches, by submitting there website URL to Link farms so that they can automatically create many links. The complex Google algorithm though, will often penalise a site for irrelevant links. Yahoo on the other hand will usually accept all links, hence the higher number of links which Yahoo will always have compared to Google, for a given website. For the Webmaster, creating links into your own site are essential, in order to move up the search engines. Valeria Lo Iacono of a new Barcelona-culture.com site reports that she is aware from previous experience that link building is essential to get her started. To get started you have to be linked to at least one other site before Google will even recognise your site.
The art of getting IBLs has actually advanced dramatically in the last few months. Many new and key ways have come into play for SEO professionals. These new areas are: - Submitting articles to article submission sites such as article-dynamite.com - Blogging - Becoming an expert on a topic by getting involved with sites such as Yahoo Answers Links achieved through article submission, blogging and Yahoo answers and other comment style sites, are in effect one way links into your site. These types of links, which are known as IBLs, are the most valuable. |
